Pamela Berstler was invited to Anderson as a speaker for Women in Entrepreneurship on Feb 3rd, 2005.  An Anderson alum who focused on Entertainment Management, Pamela returned to campus to share her journey in finding a way to make her lifelong passion her livelihood. Today, Pamela is a Los Angeles exterior designer and outdoor living expert who has designed award-winning custom residential projects throughout the United States.  She is the founder of FLOWER to the PEOPLE, an outdoor living design business and television development group. Pamela is the designer host of Discovery Channel's series Rally Round the House, and repeatedly has been the winning designer in HGTV's Landscaper's Challenge.

After her MBA in '93, Pamela returned to the industry that she knew best. She traded derivative securities, providing risk management products to financial institutions, and raising private funding for mid-sized entertainment corporations. However it wasn't until she survived the radical renovation of her West LA home and became sought after for her knowledge that she even considered a career as a licensed landscape contractor and exterior designer. When struggling to make the decision, she says, "The garden called loudest."

Pamela's entertaining and tongue-in-cheek commentary told the colorful story of a creative entrepreneur. She advised upfront to 'Stop to smell the roses because the road of entrepreneurship is no primrose path.' Pamela spoke with relish about the pleasures of the creative challenges of her work, while recognizing the limitations that this career path has imposed. She stressed the importance of continuous focus, while developing a 'comfort with unemployability', advice that is telling of a small service oriented business.

She introduced the concept of redefining what we mean by value since in her line of work, design ideas are not patentable and so need to be valued even before they are put on the table. When asked about a main turning point for the business, she talked about the opportunity to integrate her expertise in business, exterior design, and television production when FLOWER to the PEOPLE was selected by Rocket Pictures and Discovery Channel to design a new exterior makeover show called Rally Round the House.  As part of this venture, FLOWER to the PEOPLE was responsible for designing, building, and hosting more than 52 hours of reality makeover television, 50 gardens across 20 cities, all in 36 weeks!

Pamela's vision for FLOWER to the PEOPLE is to eventually move entirely into the commercial space and become more involved in television and media projects. Her passion for her work is apparent through her love of nature and commitment to redefining luxury through gardens. This vision is supported by a quote from Mike Milken, who when asked if he could live his life again, what he would do differently, responded by saying that he would have "spent time in a garden every day."
