MIT is getting one of their own of sorts to give the commencement speech this June.  Cambridge, Massachusetts native and actor Matt Damon will speak to the 2016 graduates on June 3rd.

Growing up in the neighborhood, MIT has always had a special place in Damon’s heart.  His 1997 breakout, “Good Will Hunting”, was based on a fictional janitor at the school.

MIT is not only welcoming Damon back to his hometown for his celebrity status.  His commitment to social and environmental activism is one of the major reasons he was tapped to speak.

Damon has founded groups like the H20 Africa Foundation and Water.org to help people in developing countries gain access to safe drinking water.  He works with many other groups fighting issues like poverty, genocide, and preventable diseases.

The platform that Damon has built has all been made possible through an accomplished career on the big screen.  He has been nominated for three Academy Awards and won one for the Good Will Hunting screenplay he co-wrote with Ben Affleck.

Most recently, his performance in The Martian has been nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actor.  It is just the latest success in a career that landed Damon a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2007.
