Rich Garza spent much of his young adult life in a football uniform. Whether it was with the Hurricanes of Liberty High School, the Owls of Temple University, the Eagles and Broncos of the NFL or the Stars and Gunslingers of the USFL, Garza left everything out on the field for his respective teams. But it wasn't until the football offseason in 1983 that Garza found his true calling in life. This is when Garza met former NFL chaplain and Sports World founder Ira "Doc" Eshelman. Sports World, which is an organization that sends former professional athletes around the country to speak to students about their life experiences and the importance of making the right decisions, has been in Garza's life ever since. Garza, who resides in San Antonio, Texas, has between 250 and 300 speaking engagements a year with Sports World. The 1976 Liberty graduate also has been serving as co-chaplain of the San Antonio Spurs the past 15 years. He also has provided chaplain services for the WNBA's San Antonio Silver Stars and the college football teams that play in the Alamo Bowl, including Penn State in years past. Garza met his wife, Jan, when he moved to San Antonio to play for the USFL's Gunslingers in 1984. They have one daughter and three sons together. Kelly, 21, is entering her final year at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Rich, 20, and David, 19, both play football at Tyler Junior College and 16-year-old Danny is a nose guard for the local high school team. Most of Garza's family still resides in Bethlehem, with them always keeping him up to date with his high school alma mater. In his time at Liberty, Garza earned 10 varsity letters while participating in football, basketball, baseball and track and field. Garza, who was a four-year letter winner at Temple and was part of the only Owls' football team to ever win a bowl game, knows his athletic experiences played a big part in making him the person he is today. He hopes such activities can do the same for the young people he speaks to around the country. "Catching Up With" is a weekly online feature that runs Sundays on lehighvalleylive.com.
