Current head football coach at UTSA, Larry Coker served as Miami's offensive coordinator from 1995 to 2000 before taking over as Miami's head coach in 2001 following the departure of then-coach Butch Davis.

Coker met with immediate success, guiding the Hurricanes to a 12-0 record and the national championship by badly defeating Nebraska in the Rose Bowl. It was the  most dominant season in Miami's storied football history. The 2001 Miami Hurricanes are also widely regarded as one of the greatest teams in the history of college football.

After such a monumental season, Coker won the Bear Bryant National Coach of the Year Award as well as the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Coach of the Year Award.

Coker's 'Canes won the first 12 games of the 2002 season, pushing Miami's winning streak (which dated back to the 2000 season) to 34 straight games. Coker sported an unblemished 22-0 record heading into the Fiesta Bowl for the National Championship Game. The game was controversial, but utterly thrilling as Ohio State, an 11 1/2-point underdog, defeated the Hurricanes 31-24 in double overtime for the Championship. The game is regarded by many experts as the best bowl game in college football history.

Despite the loss, Coker tied Walter Camp for the best record by a college football head coach in his first 32 games (31-1).
