In a letter to Google chief executive Eric Schmidt, ten data protection commissioners – from the UK, Germany, Canada, Spain, France, Ireland, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, and New Zealand – have slammed Google for “willfully” ignoring privacy laws in many countries while rolling out new products or privacy policies. Noting that the launch of Buzz accompanied a “disappointing disregard for fundamental privacy norms and laws,” the privacy commissioners of the ten countries said that the Mountain View, California-based Google “failed to take adequate account of privacy considerations” while launching the product. The letter essentially seeks a response Google – and implicitly other Internet firms as well - in terms of a specific outline about the manner in which the company will ensure that “privacy and data protection requirements” of different countries are met in future. Though the letter does not warn Google about any formal or informal legal action, Jacob Kohnstamm, chairman of the College Bescherming Persoonsgegevens in the Netherlands, said at a press conference: “We won't hesitate to use our powers to enforce the fundamental right to privacy, if and when this last warning seems to be ignored.
