Alice Walker has garnered numerous awards, including: the Lillian Smith Award from the National Endowment for the Arts, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Townsend Prize, the Rosenthal Award from the National Institute of Arts & Letters and a Lyndhurst Prize among many others.

Walker attended Spelman College and Sarah Lawrence College, and was active in the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. She draws largely on those experiences for writing material.

As an activist, Walker has championed many worthwhile and important causes. Aside from her activism in the Civil Rights Movement, which continues today, Walker has also spoken for the Women's Equality movement, violence against women movement, the anti-nuclear movement and the anti-apartheid movement. Walker is also active for environmental causes and issues of economic justice and equality.
