One of the nation's top urban planners recently spoke at an important community event in Omaha, Nebraska.  On Tuesday, Jeff Speck was the speaker at the Omaha-Council Bluffs Metropolitan Area Planning Agency's Heartland 2050 Summer Summit.

The summit took place from 7:30-11:30 a.m. at the Harper Center on the campus of Creighton University.  Speck discussed the importance of making cities more walkable.

Speck also shared potential barriers cities like Omaha may have to become walkable. There are four principles he outlined for city walks: usefulness, safety, comfort and interest.

Speck is the author of "Walkable City: How Downtown Can Save America, One Step at a Time".  In 2013, the book was the bestselling planning/design title.

Through his company Speck & Associates, he has developed downtown master plans and produced walkability studies for major U.S. cities. From 2003-2007, Speck was the Director of Design at the National Endowment of the Arts.

He is currently a Contributing Editor for Metropolis Magazine.  Speck also serves on the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Sustainability Task Force.
