Queen Latifah is an accomplished entertainer across several platforms. The Newark, New Jersey native has also been a champion for several causes close to her heart and been a role model for strong women in Hollywood.

All of those attributes appeal to the University of Rutgers, Newark who have invited Latifah to speak at commencement this spring. She will address the Class of 2018 on May 14 at the Prudential Center.

In addition to speaking, Latifah will also receive an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree. She will most certainly deliver a rousing speech back home in a community that means so much to her.

Latifah originally made it big in the music business and won a Grammy Award for her single, "U.N.I.T.Y.," in 1993. In the acting world, she starred on the FOX sitcom, Living Single, from 1993-98.

Latifah starred in films throughout the 1990s as well and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for Chicago in 2002. She has been apart of the main cast for the FOX drama series, Star, since 2016.

Latifah has been able to showcase her larger-than-life personality as a talk show host during two different iterations of The Queen Latifah Show. For all of her achievements in entertainment, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2006.
