Pulitzer Prize-Winning author Alice Walker has had a very distinguished career, but she is not done receiving honors.  Walker is a recipient of the Carl Sandburg Literary Award.

The accolade is presented by The Chicago Public Library Foundation and the Chicago Public Library.  She will accept the award officially at a May 25th event held at the Winter Garden of the Harold Washington Library.

The event is free and open to the public.  Attendees just have to register in advance through the Chicago Public Library.

Walker has written over 30 books, with her most famous novel being The Color Purple.  She won the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize Award for that iconic work that was turned into a critically acclaimed film.

In 1970, Walker published her first book, "The Third Life of Grange Copeland".  She is a member of the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame and The California Museum for History, Women, and the Arts.

Outside of her writing career, Walker is well known for her activism work.  Her lifelong pursuit of defending human rights started out in the 1960's as a civil rights activist.
