Icons representing the past and present of Microsoft recently made a rare joint appearance together in Vancouver. Former co-founder Bill Gates and current CEO Satya Nadella spoke at a Microsoft regional conference on September 20th.
They both fielded questions from company president and chief legal officer Brad Smith. The duo spoke about a wide range of topics critical to Microsoft, including innovation and education.
Gates and Nadella also addressed the importance of government funding for basic research and what good can come from a more connected global community. Uniquely, Gates was able to provide some perspective from the past while Nadella added some takes on where things are headed in the future.
Gates co-founded Microsoft along with Paul Allen in 1975. He saw the company grow to the largest PC software distributor in the world before stepping down in 2014.
Gates is known as the wealthiest man in the world. To his credit, much of his fortune has gone back to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, an organization established in 2000 that works to solve several global problems.
Since 2014, Nadella has been the CEO of Microsoft. He has been with the company in a variety of positions since 1992, including Executive Vice President of the Cloud and Enterprise Group.
Prior to joining Microsoft, Nadella worked at Sun Microsystems. He holds an M.S. in computer science from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
