The #MeToo movement is one of the most high-profile recent campaigns involving social activism. While Tarana Burke had devoted her life to helping women who have been abused, she is now best identified with that simple hashtag that inspired a nationwide conversation.

Burke will share her experiences as the keynote speaker at the WOW Baltimore on April 28th. The event is being held at the Notre Dame of Maryland University and it will address several issues facing women.

WOW festivals have been staged all over the world since beginning in London in 2011. The first WOW Baltimore event welcomed thousands to NDMU in 2016.

Burke has been working with victims of sexual abuse and assault for over 25 years. She is the senior director of programs at Girls for Gender Equality in Brooklyn, New York.

Before working in Brooklyn, Burke was active with several organizations in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is also the founder of the organization, Just Be Inc., which supports young female minorities who are victims of sexual abuse.

Burke was included in a group of female activists that were named Time Person of the Year in 2017. She had the unique distinction to work as a consultant in the filming of the historical drama, Selma
