Joan Lunden rose to fame in the 1980s as the co-host of Good Morning America, but today she mostly speaks out urging women to get tested for breast cancer. She recently shared this message as the keynote speaker at the Massey Cancer Center's 23rd Annual Women & Wellness Breakfast and Luncheon.

Lunden has seen the effects of breast cancer up-close, first watching her father deal with patients as a cancer surgeon and then battling the disease after her 2014 diagnosis. She told the crowd at the Jefferson Hotel in Richmond, Virginia, that even with her family background, she was still shocked when she was told she had cancer.

Lunden spoke to the women about the importance of knowing the density of your breast tissue. She outlined how mammograms sometimes do not detect cancer is a woman has dense tissue.

Lunden is a powerful voice with many fondly remembering her days as GMA co-host from 1980-1997. Her ABC News career began in 1975 and she first joined GMA a year later as a correspondent and fill-in anchor.

Over her time with ABC News, she covered four presidents, five Olympic Games and traveled to 26 countries. From 2007-14, Lunden served as a host and reporter for Retirement Living TV.

Lunden is currently a special correspondent for NBC's TODAY. In addition to her work promoting breast cancer awareness, she also has been a national spokesperson for Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
