Burlington, Vermont was able to attract the daughter of one of the most influential civil rights leaders of all-time to speak at their annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day event.  Malcolm X's daughter, Ilyasah Shabazz spoke on Sunday afternoon at the First Unitarian Universalist Chuch.

In addition to Shabazz's speech, the Greater Burlington Multicultural Resource Center presented their 2016 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Award.  Tickets to the presentation were available for free through the Fletcher Free Library and City Market.

Shabazz shared her experiences as the product of two influential parents.  She urged young people to continue to speak out against hatred and injustice.

Shabazz's memoir, Growing Up X, won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Nonfiction Literary Work.  She has also written three other books.

Today, she continues to preserve her father's legacy as the founder of Malcolm X Enterprises and a trustee for the Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center.  Shabazz is also on the Board of the Harlem Symphony Orchestra and a member of the Arts Committee for the New York City Opera at Lincoln Center.

In addition to her literary work, Shabazz was an advisor on the award-winning PBS documentary, Prince Among Slaves.  She received a bachelor's degree from the State University of New York at New Paltz and her master's from Fordham University.
