The art that Janet Echelman creates is truly unique.  The message of finding one's own artistic sensibility was one point Echelman stressed on Monday night as she spoke at the University of Missouri Visual Art and Design Showcase.

Echelman's presentation was held at Jesse Auditorium.  She talked about being rejected from seven art schools and painting for ten years before truly finding what would make her world renown.

In addition to her speech, Echelman was one of the judges on a panel to critique 36 students in the areas of applied design and artistic expression.  Winners of both categories received $3,000.

Echelman is known for her painting of fishnets and has hung her pieces all over the world.  Over the last nearly 20 years, she has been signature works and is also a noted sculptor.

In 2012, Echelman was named Architectural Digest Innovator.  She is a recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship and her "Taking Imagination Seriously" TEDTalk has been translated into 33 languages and viewed by over a million people.

Most recently, Echelman has been hard at work transforming historic Dilworth Plaza in Philadelphia and designing a sculpture for Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene, Oregon.  Last year, she was commissioned by the Smithsonian American Art Museum to transform their Renwick Gallery.
