The South Dakota Famers Union State Convention had a natural choice for their keynote speaker this year. Animal handling expert and author Temple Grandin addressed the crowd on December 9th at the Crossroads Convention Center in Huron, South Dakota.

Grandin's speech was free and open to the public. It was her second trip to the state in as many years after a 2014 visit.

The convention was particularly significant because it marked the centennial celebration of the South Dakota Famers Union. Grandin spoke passionately about the issues affecting farmers and their operations today.

Grandin has been at the forefront of developing humane livestock systems.  She is also a professor of animal science at Colorado State University.

Her success as a person living with autism has made Grandin an inspiration to many.  In 2010, she was named one of Time's 100 Most Influential People.

That same year, she gave a presentation at a TEDTalk conference about inspiring children who fall on the autism spectrum.  Grandin is also the creator of the hug box, a that calms those with autism.

Grandin garnered perhaps her most publicity from the semi-biographical HBO film, Temple Grandin.  The film was nominated for 15 Emmys and won five awards.
