1985 MVP for the St. Louis Cardinals, Willie McGee was born November 2, 1958 in San Francisco, California, spending the majority of his 18-year career playing for the St. Louis Cardinals. McGee was recognized as one of the outstanding players of his time, having won the 1985 National League MVP award, batting titles in both 1985 and 1990, and three Gold Glove Awards.

During the 1980s, McGee, along with Cardinals teammates Ozzie Smith, Tom Herr and Vince Coleman, would exemplify "Whiteyball", a style of baseball named after Cardinals manager Whitey Herzog. This style of baseball took advantage of St. Louis' spacious Busch Stadium and placed strong emphasis on fundamentals, defense, speedy baserunning and smart situational in-game play surrounding the lone big bat of Jack Clark.

McGee ended his career with 3029 total bases. He had a .976 fielding percentage overall, including several games as an infielder. In the postseason, he had a .276 batting average, four home runs and 23 RBIs. He had 16 stolen bases, including four in World Series games.
