His result was a rebound from his 2004 performance, where he had no Top 5's and finished in 13th place in the championship standings.

He finished eighth in IRL IndyCar Series points standings in 2003. He won the Twin Ring Motegi event and gave Toyota its second straight victory on the Japanese oval. His victory was his eighth career IndyCar Series win.

In 2002, Sharp finished sixth in the points standings and scored a win at Nazareth, passing Gil de Ferran for lead on final lap when de Ferran ran out of fuel.

Sharp finished third in the 2001 points standings after winning at Texas, capturing three runner-up finishes and compiling six other top-10 finishes. His 33rd-place finish at the Indy 500, when he crashed on the first lap after starting on the pole, hurt him in the title chase.

The third-place finish in the points was an improvement over 2000, when he was seventh but had just one other top-five and one top-10 finish. In contrast, Sharp won once and collected four other top-10 finishes in 1999. He also won twice in 1998, when he finished fourth in points, and once in 1996-1997, when he finished 22nd.

Before coming to the IRL, Sharp competed in CART for a full season and was a two-time champion in the SCCA Trans-Am series.

Sharp has a degree in finance and investments from Babson College. He currently resides in Jupiter, Florida.
