Hearst has been nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award six times, winning for "Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series" in 2004 for his General Hospital role, after previously winning "Outstanding Younger Actor in a Drama Series" for The Guiding Light, in 1991. He has also been nominated for four Soap Opera Digest Awards, winning "Outstanding Villain" for The Young and the Restless in 2001.

The character "Ric Lansing" has been experiencing an evolutionary process. After divorcing Nurse Elizabeth Webber, Ric Lansing, District Attorney in Port Charles has remarried Natasha "Alexis Davis" Cassandine, making the character step-dad to brother Sonny Corinthos' offspring, Kristina Corinthos Davis. In Port Charles, dad and step-dad wait anxiously for news as mom Alexis is hospitalized with pregnancy related hypertension.

Rick's been married to wife Donna Smoot since 1990, they have two sons.

Although his real last name is Herbst, he is not related to his General Hospital co-star Rebecca Herbst.
