Mohsin Hamid was born in 1971 in Lahore. He grew up mostly in Pakistan but spent part of his childhood in California, returning to America to attend Princeton University. There, he studied under writers Joyce Carol Oates and Toni Morrison.

He attended Harvard Law School, and then worked in New York and London, initially as a management consultant with McKinsey & Company and later as managing director of a branding firm.

His first novel, Moth Smoke, was published in 2000, and quickly became a cult hit in Pakistan and India. It was also a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway Award, given to the best first novel in the US, and was adapted for television in Pakistan and as an operetta in Italy.

His second novel, The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2007), recounted a Pakistani man's abandonment of his high-flying life in New York after 9/11. Published in 23 languages, it became an international bestseller. It won the Ambassador Book Award, the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award, the Asian American Literary Award, and the South Bank Show Award for Literature, and was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize. The Guardian selected it as "one of the books that defined the decade" and it is being made into a major motion picture.

Hamid has also written on politics, art, literature, travel, and other topics for TIME, The Guardian, The New York Times, The Independent, The Washington Post, La Repubblica, The Paris Review, and other publications.

He divides his time between Lahore, London and New York.
