Larry Merchant joined HBO in 1978 as a boxing analyst. Prior to joining HBO Sports, Merchant was a sports columnist in Philadelphia.
Working with fellow commentators Jim Lampley and Emmanuel Steward for championship and pay-per-view fights, they may be the most watched team in boxing. Previous lineups have included George Foreman and Roy Jones Jr., both of whom clashed with Merchant at times.
In 1985, Merchant received the Sam Taub Memorial Award for Boxing Broadcast Journalism from the Boxing Writers Association of America. Merchant has also authored three books.
Merchant was was inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame in Los Angeles in October of 2002.
