Jon Lovett was the co-creator and head writer of the NBC sitcom, “1600 Penn.” Prior to this, Jon spent three years as a speechwriter for President Barack Obama during a dynamic and tumultuous time in our history, allowing for a unique perspective on politics, humor, communications, and the absurd way things really work in our nation’s capital.

During his tenure at the White House, Jon drafted speeches on a complete range of public policy issues. He also helped craft the jokes and materials used by the President at the annual White House Correspondents Dinner, where the President pokes fun at Washington, the press, and himself. Before serving in the White House, Jon was chief speechwriter to then-Senator Hillary Clinton, working both on her presidential campaign and in her Senate office. But his career in politics really began when at nine years old he played the part of Ross Perot in a 1992 mock debate at Walt Whitman Elementary School on Long Island, performing ably despite the inherent strictures of the two party system.

Jon is a 2004 graduate of Williams College. He earned a degree in math, as one of few math majors who could both do Riemannian geometry and make eye contact with women, co-authoring a peer-reviewed paper in American Mathematical Monthly.

After college but before entering politics, he spent time doing standup at comedy clubs around New York. His amateur comedy career was vindicated years later when he beat Grover Norquist in a standup competition and was named “Washington’s Funniest Celebrity,” which tells you all you need to know about what passes for a celebrity in Washington.
