John Yang was named NBC News White House correspondent in November 2007. Yang is based in Washington, D.C. and contributes to all NBC News properties, including “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams,” “Today” and MSNBC. Yang joined NBC News as a correspondent in January 2007. Prior to joining NBC News, Yang was an ABC News correspondent based in Washington, D.C. from 2004 to 2006. In the fall of 2006, Yang reported on exclusive developments in the former Congressman Mark Foley sex scandal. From 2002 to 2004, Yang was based in Jerusalem as a Middle East correspondent for ABC News. Yang covered every major development in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and in June 2003, he reported alongside the late Peter Jennings at the landmark summit meeting between President Bush, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas in Aqaba, Jordan. Yang reported on the Israeli military operation in the Jenin Refugee Camp, and on the final days of the standoff at the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. In addition, Yang was the first American broadcast reporter to interview captured al Qaeda fighters imprisoned by the Kurds along the Iran-Iraq border. In 2007, Yang was the only television correspondent to accompany President Bush on his surprise Labor Day visit to al Anbar Province in Iraq. He first joined ABC News as a Washington-based correspondent in 1999, covering politics and general news stories for ABC News' network news programs and ABCNEWS.com. In 2000, he covered the campaign of then-Texas Gov. George W. Bush during the Republican primaries. That fall, he covered then-Vice President Al Gore's presidential campaign through Election Day and the Florida recount. In the days following the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks, Yang reported from the Pentagon and was part of the ABC News team honored with both a George Foster Peabody Award and an Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia University Award. Yang was also part of the ABC News team honored with an Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia University Award for coverage of the death of Pope John Paul II. Prior to joining ABC News, Yang was a reporter and editor at The Washington Post for nearly ten years. As a reporter, he covered Congress and the White House, and as an editor directed coverage of economic policy in the paper's business section and oversaw political features in the Post's ‘Style ‘section. Throughout his print career, he covered Congress and national politics. He previously worked for The Boston Globe, Time magazine and The Wall Street Journal. Yang was born in Chillicothe, Ohio and graduated cum laude from Wesleyan University in 1980.
