An All-American for the University of Nebraska in 1983, Irving Fryar played with Heisman Trophy winner Mike Rozier, and quarterback Turner Gill. Fryar was the first wide receiver to be drafted #1 overall in the NFL Draft by the New England Patriots. He played for the Patriots, Miami Dolphins, Philadelphia Eagles, and the Washington Redskins. He made it to Super Bowl XX in the 1985 season with the Patriots and scored their only touchdown in their 46-10 loss to the Chicago Bears. He played a total of 255 games in his career and made the pro bowl 5 times(1985, 1993, 1994, 1996, 1997). His best year as a Patroit was 1991, when he caught 68 receptions for 1,014 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Fryar retired from the NFL in 2001, after completing 17 NFL seasons. During that time he caught 851 passes for 12,785 yards and 84 touchdowns. He also scored 1 rushing touchdown and 3 touchdowns on punt returns. His combined receiving yards (12,785), rushing yards (242) kickoff return yards (505), fumble return yards (7) and punt return yards (2,055) gave him an impressive total of 15,594 combined net yards from the line of scrimmage.

Fryar overcame a difficult past, and is now an ordained pentecostal minister.
