Demetri Sevastopulo is the Financial Times Washington Bureau Chief. In this role, he leads our coverage of US policy and politics, including the 2016 presidential campaign.
Demetri has spent a total of eight years in Washington, most recently as US political correspondent. During a previous stint in the capital, he covered the Pentagon and CIA for six years. He joined the Washington bureau as a business correspondent in 2002.
He returned to Washington in 2015 after five years in Hong Kong where he served as Asia News Editor, running our news operations in the region and acting as global news editor during the Asian day. He also reported from China as South China Correspondent.
During his career, Demetri has covered a wide array of stories, including the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, the war on terror, Guantanamo Bay, cyber security, South China Sea tensions, Sino-Japanese relations, Hurricane Katrina, the Baltimore riots, the Japanese nuclear crisis, China’s anti-corruption campaign, Chinese factories and labour strife, the largest soccer school in the world in China, and the Umbrella Revolution in Hong Kong.
He began his career as a currency trader at Citibank in Japan. He later covered the Japanese economy for Bloomberg News. He holds an MA degree in East Asian studies from Harvard University where he taught Japanese and Chinese history as a teaching fellow and served as a senior editor at Harvard China Review. An Irish national, Demetri graduated from Trinity College, Dublin, with an undergraduate degree in finance.
Demetri studied Chinese at Beijing University and Japanese at Sophia University in Tokyo. He speaks and reads near-native Japanese, fluent Mandarin, basic Cantonese and rusty French.
