One of the most popular singer-songwriters of the 1970s, she won a Grammy for Best New Artist in 1971. Simon had her first hit single in 1973 with "You're So Vain," a song that has stirred up years of debate. People continue to wonder who Simon was singing about in the song, but she had never publicly revealed her inspiration.

Simon's experience as a mother inspired her to record a children's album that won a Best Recording for Children Grammy in 1980. Her biggest musical success during the 1980s came with "Let the River Run," a song written for the movie "Working Girl." For the composition, she won her third Grammy and her first Oscar. She successfully fought a publicized battle with breast cancer in the late 1990s.

Simon added children's book author to her long list of accomplishments in 1989 with the publication of "Amy the Dancing Bear." Since then, she has published several more titles, including 1997's "Midnight Farm." She is also a partner in a store of the same name in Martha's Vineyard, MA. Continuing to record, Simon has released several albums in recent years, including 2008's "This Kind of Love."

In 2009, Simon released Never Been Gone, an album of acoustic reworkings of some of her classic songs.
