In 1999, after moving into NASCAR's Weekly Racing Series Vickers competed at various tracks in the southeastern United States in the Late Model Stock division, Vickers won six races and captured 11 pole positions.
In July 2001 at age 17, Vickers made his NASCAR Busch Series debut at The Milwaukee Mile in a family-owned car and would later make three more Busch starts that year.
In 2002, Vickers nearly missed his high school graduation because he was busy with Busch Series time trials at Lowe's Motor Speedway for the Busch Series event. In fact, he chose to skip his high school prom earlier in the year to compete in the Busch race at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.
Vickers etched his name into the records books, becoming NASCAR's youngest-ever titleholder at age 20 and earning a spot on Hendrick Motorsports' NEXTEL Cup Series roster behind the wheel of the No. 25 Chevrolets.
