Billy Smith fought opposing players, used his stick to rid the goalie crease of encroaching forwards; fought the media with bold tirades and occasionally took on teammates and coaches. Battling Billy was best though, at fighting the puck, especially when the Stanley Cup was on the line. Combative and competitive, Smith was one of the best goalies of his era, winning the Stanley Cup four straight times with the New York Islanders.
Smith was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings, the team's sixth selection and 59th overall, in the 1970 Amateur Draft. He played the next two seasons with the Springfield Kings in the American Hockey League and led the squad to the Calder Cup in 1971. He played five games with Los Angeles before he was claimed by the Islanders in the 1972 Expansion Draft.
When the 1980 Stanley Cup playoffs began, Smith was the Islanders' main goalie and The Islanders won their first Stanley Cup. In 1982, Smith lead the league in regular-season wins for the only time and won the Vezina Trophy. However, from 1980 to 1984, five straight years, Smith led the NHL in a more important stat " playoff victories.
Billy Smith retired from after the 1988-89 season as an Islander, finishing his career with 305 regular season wins and 88 in the playoffs. In 1993 Smith was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
