Ben Crenshaw is a longtime professional golfer, turning pro in 1973. Crenshaw won the very first Tour event he entered, the San Antonio-Texas Open.
Crenshaw's seemingly effortless game and easy-going manner soon garnered him respect from the Tour's other players and over the years he earned the nickname "Gentle Ben." Crenshaw received the Bobby Jones Award in 1991, the highest honor the United States Golf Association bestows upon its members. The honor was especially meaningful to Crenshaw, as Bobby Jones was always his golfing idol and model for the game.
Crenshaw's most memorable win was his emotional victory in the 1995 Masters Tournament. His teacher and close friend, Harvey Penick, had died during Masters week, and somehow Crenshaw returned to Augusta to the second Masters of his career, securing his place in golf history.
Crenshaw was honored by the PGA of America and was named Captain of the 1999 American Ryder Cup Team which went on to score an emotional Ryder Cup victory.
