Banny Banerjee is Director of Stanford ChangeLabs, which advances innovation methodologies for complex, and scaled challenges. He teaches Strategic Innovation for large-scaled sustainable transformation, Systems Leadership, and business model innovation. His class, Innovating Large Scale Sustainable Transformation is offered through the Stanford d.School.
Banny is known for his work on systems based innovation and Systems Leadership in large-scale transformations in multi-dimensional challenges. The trans-disciplinary nature of his work, which combines design thinking, technology strategy, business innovation, applied social psychology, behavioral economics, diffusion theory, and resilience theory, is pioneering the formation of a new type of innovation: “System Acupuncture”.
Banny is Professor of Practice at the Stanford School of Earth Energy and Environmental Sciences, Associate Director of Stanford Change.X, a platform for Transformative Leadership, and teaches Design Innovation and Strategy at the Stanford d.school. He is a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future’s Council on Systems and Platforms and heads the Systems Leadership group.
His research initiatives are centered on processes, paradigms, and integrated strategies to address complex challenges such as the future of water, energy, governance systems, and organizational transformations. He is active in helping academic and corporate organizations create new innovation programs and institutions. His work involves combining innovation methodologies with social entrepreneurship, behavioral economics, business, and technology resulting in new approaches, which maintain necessary short-term advantages as well as long-term benefits.
Prior to ChangeLabs, Banny served as the Director of the Design Program at Stanford. He was responsible for restructuring the curriculum and rubric of the undergraduate and graduate design programs. Before his academic appointment at Stanford, Banny worked in the field of product design and strategic design at the design firm IDEO.
