Starbucks is going to be able to lean on the expertise from a business leader in a totally different industry.  Ulta Beauty CEO Mary Dillon was named to the company's Board of Directors this month.

Dillon will serve on the board's Compensation and Management Development Committee.  Her three decades of experience with consumer brands will definitely be an asset.

Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz said in a statement, “Mary shares our desire to deliver shareholder value while embracing the values and guiding principles that serve our people, our customers, and the neighborhoods where we do business, and we are honored to have her join the Starbucks Board of Directors. Mary’s proven track record for leveraging consumer insights and customer-focused strategies together with her leadership and passion for excellence make her the ideal addition to contribute to our next phase of growth as a company.”

Dillon took over Ulta Beauty in 2013 and piloted the company to 21 percent top-line growth in 2014.  She has added over 5,000 jobs during her tenure and now oversees 22,000 full and part-time employees.

Prior to arriving at Ulta, Dillon was the president and CEO of U.S. Cellular.  She also worked as CMO and executive vice president for McDonald's and as president of PepsiCo's Quaker Foods division.

In 2015, Dillon was sixth on Fortune Magazine's Business Person of the Year List.  In addition to serving on the Starbucks board, she is on the Ulta Beauty Board of Directors and previously served in the same role for Target and U.S. Cellular.
