The Greater Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce went outside of the box for the entertainment at their annual meeting. Impressionist David Browning reprised one of his iconic characters last month at Cross Creek Country Club in North Carolina.
Browning took on the role of "The Mayberry Deputy" patterned after the legendary Barney Fife from The Andy Griffith Show. The crowd of 200 was entertained all night long by the performance.
He appears in character at the area's "Mayberry Days" celebration every year. In addition to Browning's performance, the Citizen of the Year award was presented and a new Board of Directors was sworn in.
In addition to The Mayberry Deputy, Browning also makes appearances as Abe Lincoln and Ebenezer Scrooge to name a few. He originally started playing the Fife-based character in 1988.
Don Knotts, who played Fife in The Andy Griffith Show, embraced Browning's interpretation and often had him open for his comedy shows. Overall, he has performed in 35 states.
Browning discovered an ability to play different characters during his first acting opportunities in community theater. Since that time, there has been no shortage of people uplifted by his depictions.
