Recent flooding in Northwest England and particularly Cumbria county has done massive damage and halted some people's way of life. Well known explorer and Englishman Sir Chris Bonington has stepped in with an event to raise funds for flood recovery.
Bonington has put his name behind Grand Day Out in Cumbria as the event patron. On January 16th, a variety of activities including musical performances, film screenings, and outdoor activities will work together Cumbria’s mountain rescue teams and Cumbria Community Foundation’s Flood Recovery Appeal.
There will also be a charity auction and raffle featuring prizes from partners across the UK. After the environmental havoc caused by the flooding, it is now surprising that Bonington, a Cumbria resident, stepped in.
He is one of the world's best-known mountaineers. Bonington's explorations have included 19 Himalayan expeditions and four treks to Mount Everest.
After scaling Everest in 1975, Bonington was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Upon reaching the summit again in 1985 at 50 years old, he became the oldest person to do so for a period of time.
Bonington has written many books about his experiences and served as the chancellor of Lancaster University from 2005-2014. To mark his 80th birthday in 2014, he climbed The Old Man of Hoy, a 449-foot sea stack on an archipelago off the coast of Scotland.
