While director Ridley Scott certainly had a presence at the Academy Awards with his film "The Martian" being nominated for Best Picture, he stole the show in another way as well. An IBM commercial starring Scott debuted during the Oscars telecast.
In the ad, he speaks to the iconic IBM robot Watson about visual storytelling. Scott also coaches Watson on filmmaking.
The spot is an extension of the "Watson & Me" campaign that shows off how the AI technology system learns from its user. Actress Carrie Fisher was also featured in an IBM spot that debuted during the awards show.
Prior to The Martian nomination, the Scott-directed picture "Gladiator" was nominated and won for Best Picture in 2000. He received a nomination for Best Director for that film and also for his work on "Thelma & Louise" and "Black Hawk Down".
Scott has been nominated for Best Director at the Golden Globes three times as well. His impact extends beyond the big screen however.
In 1984, Scott directed the iconic Super Bowl commercial for Apple's Macintosh personal computer. More recently, he has teamed with his brother to produce the hit CBS television series' "Numb3rs" and "The Good Wife".
