While much of Tavis Smiley's background is in the broadcasting world, he has also become an accomplished author.  Smiley's most recent book is titled, "Before You Judge Me: The Triumph And Tragedy of Michael Jackson ’s Last Days".

Just last month, Smiley held a book signing to promote his latest work at the Barnes & Noble at The Grove in Los Angeles.  The book chronicles the tumultuous final days in the life of legendary pop icon Michael Jackson.

Smiley only met Jackson a handful of times but began research for the book prior to his death.  He also received the blessing of Jackson's mother Katherine to write the story.

Overall, Smiley has penned 18 books and several New York Times bestsellers.  He currently hosts the weeknight talk show "Tavis Smiley" on PBS and "The Tavis Smiley Show" on Public Radio International.

Smiley rose to fame as the host of "BET Talks" in the late 1990's.  He interviewed many influential newsmakers of the day, generating headlines for himself and the network.

Smiley founded the Tavis Smiley Foundation in 1999 and it has since provided leadership training to over 6,500 young people.  In 2014, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
