Winona LaDuke is an Anishinaabeg (Ojibwe). In 1982, after graduating from Harvard with a degree in native economic development, Winona LaDuke packed her bags and moved to the ancestral lands of her people, located in a poor, rural county of northern Minnesota named White Earth.
LaDuke was founding director of the White Earth Land Recovery Project, which is a reservation-based, land acquisition, environmental advocacy and cultural organization. Ms. LaDuke is a former board member of Greenpeace USA. In 1996 and 2000, LaDuke was Ralph Nader's vice presidential running mate on the Green Party ticket.
Since the age of 18, LaDuke has been a noted speaker. She addressed the United Nations regarding Native American issues. In 1995, she gave the keynote address to the UN's Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China.
In 1994, LaDuke was nominated by Time magazine as one of America's 50 most promising leaders under age 40.
