William Raspberry grew up in the small Mississippi town of Okolona, which he says is similiar to the one in "To Kill a Mockingbird." "We had two of everything there," he laments, "one for whites and one for blacks." After high school, it was off to Indiana Central College where he graduated with a B.S. in history in 1960.
William Raspberry's newspaper career began with a summer job at the Indianapolis Recorder in 1956. It was there where, as reporter, photographer and editor he was inspired to join The Washington Post in 1962, after two years in the Army. At The Post, the young Raspberry was hired as a teletype operator, however, he quickly advanced to general assignment reporter, copy editor and then assistant city editor.
It was Mr. Raspberry's coverage of the 1965 Watts riot in Los Angeles which earned him the Capital Press Club's "Journalist of the Year" award.
Fast forward 29 years to 1994, that is when William Raspberry won the Pulitzer Prize for Distinguished Commentary.
The National Association of Black Journalists gave him its 1994 Lifetime Achievement Award.
William Raspberry's once-a-week commentary currently appears in more than 100 newspapers.
Raspberry, who resides in Washington D.C., teaches at Duke University, serving in the Knight Chair in Communications and Journalism.
