As a Nationally syndicated newspaper columnist, Buckley's work appears in more than 300 newspapers, and he has authored numerous fiction and non-fiction books. His strict adherence to proper grammar, strong opinion and use of uncommon words have characterized his writing style. Buckley is also the author of a series of novels featuring the character of CIA agent Blackford Oakes. He has also written several books on communicating, writing, history, political thought and sailing.
In 1951, Buckley published his first book, God and Man at Yale. He then worked as an editor for "The American Mercury" in 1951 and 1952 before founding the "National Review" in 1955. In 1957, Buckley published a review of "Ayn Rand's Atlas", and in 1960, he helped form Young Americans for Freedom. Five years later, in 1965, he ran for mayor of New York City and in 1973, he served as a delegate to the United Nations.
In 1991, Buckley received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President George H.W. Bush.
Currently, Buckley continues to write his syndicated newspaper column, as well as some opinion pieces for the National Review bi-weekly magazine and the popular daily Web version of the magazine National Review Online, known widely as NRO. Buckley remains editor-at-large of the magazine and he also lectures, grants occasional radio interviews and makes guest appearances on national television news programs.
