Vonetta Flowers 2002 U.S. Olympic Team mates selected Vonetta to be the American flag bearer at the Closing Ceremony of Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City. Vonetta has also received the U.S. Olympic Spirit Award and the Citizenship Through Sports Alliance Award.
By the time Vonetta graduated she was one of the University of Alabama's all-time most decorated athletes with thirty-five conference titles and victories in the Penn Relays and The Olympic Festival and Vonetta was the school's first Seven-Time All-American.
It wasn't until Vonetta Flowers' husband came upon a 'help wanted' ad put out by the US Bobsled Federation looking for promising track athletes to adapt to bobsled that her dream of becoming an Olympian was rekindled � this time as a winter Olympian.
Vonetta Flowers went to a bobsled tryout and impressed the USA team with her speed and power. By the end of her rookie season, she became the best brakewoman in the country. Flowers took the world by surprise and won USA's first women's bobsled gold medal in history. Vonetta Flowers was the first African-American to win an Olympic winter gold medal.
