After his service in the US Marine Corps, Sowell earned an A.B. in Economics from Harvard College and an A.M.in Economics from Columbia University. He went on the earn a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Chicago, where he studied under Nobel Prize winners George Stigler and Milton Friedman.
Sowell has taught at prominent American universities including Cornell University and UCLA. Presently, he is a senior fellow at Stanford University's Hoover Institution where he holds the fellowship named after Rose and Milton Friedman.
