He has also worked as a substitute anchor for NBC Nightly News and Today and as a substitute moderator on Meet the Press.
Phillips was born in Texas City, Texas to Victor (Monsanto chemical engineer) and Grace (teacher) Phillips and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. He attended Parkway West Senior High School. During college at Yale he was the starting quarterback for the football team and graduated with a degree in philosophy. He was also a member of the Yale secret society "Scroll and Key." He has also hosted Weekend Magazine with Stone Phillips. In 1986, he landed his first major on-air role as a correspondent for 20/20. That year, he also acted as substitute host on Good Morning America and as sports anchor on ABC's World News Sunday.
On October 17, 2005, Phillips was a guest on the premiere episode of The Colbert Report. He is known for his clear delivery and appearance of gravitas. On June 6, 2006 Phillips returned for the 100th episode of the Report as the first repeat guest in the show's history.
Phillips lives in New York with wife, Debra, and son Streeter Phillips (b. 1988). Streeter Philips attended the Fieldston School in Riverdale in the Bronx. Streeter has been accepted to Yale's class of 2010.
