In 1994, he led the Chargers through an impressive series of victories through the NFL Playoffs that started with the Chargers defeating the Miami Dolphins (led by Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino) 22-21 in the Divisional playoffs, and was followed by what would become one of pro football's all-time great upsets as the Chargers succeeded in holding off a last-minute rally by the Pittsburgh Steelers to win the AFC championship 17-13 at Pittsburgh's Three Rivers Stadium. The Chargers would then advance to Super Bowl XXIX for the first time in franchise history, losing to the San Francisco 49ers 49-26.
Humphries was known as a gutsy quarterback that played with great determination despite injury. He played with a separated left shoulder in the 1992 AFC Wildcard Playoffs in which the Chargers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 17-0 but lost to the Miami Dolphins 31-0 in the AFC Divisional Playoffs the following week. In 1994, he took the Chargers to Super Bowl XXIX with a dislocated left elbow. Humphries did not have the greatest athleticism, but his heart and leadership were admired by many San Diego Chargers fans.

Stan Humphries currently works as an assistant coach for the Ouachita Christian School (OCS) Eagles football team. He also serves as an assistant on the OCS girls' basketball team.
