He started his NASCAR racing career in the Weekly Racing Series, where he logged 36 victories and 39 poles in seven years of Late Model Stock Car competition, and progressed to the Craftsman Truck Series.
In two full seasons in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, Compton went from being an unknown short-track driver to a legitimate championship threat and the circuit's best qualifier. He won two truck races in 1998, finished seventh in the championship and was named the Series' most popular driver. In his '99 NCTS campaign, Stacy finished an impressive fourth in the point standings while compiling 17 top-10s in 25 starts.
Compton's results in '99 were strong enough to earn him a full-time Nextel Cup ride in 2000. In his rookie season he qualified in the top-25 17 times in 36 races, but only converted that into one top-10 finish, a 10th in the season opening Daytona 500.
Compton profiled his raw speed on NASCAR's restrictor plate tracks in '01, with a pair of Bud Poles at Talladega and a starting spot on the outside of the front row for the Daytona 500.
In '02, Compton teamed up with ST Motorsports to run the entire NASCAR Busch Series schedule. He finished ninth in the title hunt, with five top-5 finishes and eleven top-10 efforts in 34 starts. He had just three DNFs all season. In 2003, the team faltered late in the season and he finished a disappointing 11th in the points standings.
ST Motorsports expanded to a two-car operation in '04 adding Robert Pressley to the driver lineup, and switched to the Ford brand to boost on-track performance. Compton posted a season's best third-place at California Speedway early in the season and finished 14th in the overall point standings.
Jon Wood took the reins of the No. 47 Ford in '05 as a teammate to Compton, and the duo ended the season 15th and 16th in the final driver standings, with Wood edging out Compton by just one point. The announced partnership between Wood Brothers Racing and ST Motorsports�creating Wood Brothers/JTG Racing�should enhance the on-track performance of the series' longest running standalone organization in '06.
