From 1988-1995, he was heard on WSBK-TV before calling the games on WFXT-TV. Four times, in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2001 McDonough was honored with the New England Sports Emmy Award for Outstanding Play-by-Play for his work on Boston Red Sox baseball.
Sean McDonough, the son of longtime Boston Globe writer and former NBC and CBS sportscaster Will McDonough, was graduated cum laude from Syracuse University in 1984.
On a national level, Sean McDonough is perhaps, best known for being the lead play-by-play voice for Major League Baseball coverage on CBS. After replacing Jack Buck in 1992, he and Tim McCarver formed the network's lead MLB broadcast team. McDonough called two of the most dramatic baseball moments in recent memory. The first one was Francisco Cabrera's game winning base-hit in Game 7 of the 1992 National League Championship Series. The second one was Joe Carter's World Series winning home run in the 1993 World Series.
Besides calling baseball for CBS, McDonough also called men's and women's college basketball, including 10 NCAA Tournaments, NFL, golf and U.S. Open Tennis coverage. In addition, McDonough also contributed to CBS' 1992 and 1994 Winter Olympic Games, calling bobsled and luge competition. In 1998, he provided play-by-play for CBS' ice hockey coverage at the Winter Olympic Games in Nagano.
McDonough also worked at ESPN from 1990-1996 where he called MLB, NHL, college football, college basketball and soccer. In the fall of 2000, he returned to ESPN to call NHL games.
Sean McDonough joined ABC Sports as a college football play-by-play announcer in August 2000. Prior to coming to ABC, McDonough spent ten years with CBS Sports, where he served as the network's lead college football play-by-play announcer from 1997 through 1999. Previously, he had worked regional telecasts in 1996.
