Wimmer failed to record a top-10 finish in 2005, and has just one top-five and three-top 10s in Cup racing.

But as recently as 2002 Wimmer finished third in the final Busch Series standings, recording four victories with 11 top-fives and 17 top-10s. He finished ninth the following season.

Wimmer has liked going fast at an early age. He began snow-skiing competitively at age 5 and competed in the Junior Olympics at age 14. He finished 13th out of 150 competitors.

Wimmer also liked driving motorized machines, and at age 8 began racing three-wheelers. The following year, in 1985, he finished second in the National Amateur Off-Road Championship.

Wimmer started racing stock cars at age 15 at his hometown track, Wausau Speedway. From 1994-96 Wimmer posted 17 victories and won local and regional championships competing at various Midwestern tracks in a Late Model stock car.

From 1997-99 Wimmer enjoyed success in the Hooters series, winning both Late Model and Pro Cup rookie of the year honors in successive seasons.

In 2000 Wimmer joined the American Speed Association Series and won the first two races in which he competed. He also began his NASCAR career with one Cup start and three Busch races.

In 2001 he was in a full-time Busch ride. He finished with two top-fives and eight top-10s to rank 11th in the final point standings. In 2002 Wimmer recorded his first victory, at Dover, beginning a stretch in which he won four of the season's final eight races, including back-to-back wins at Phoenix and the Homestead finale.

In 2003 Wimmer posted one victory, four top-fives and 12 top-10s in his final Busch Season. In September '03 Wimmer scored his first Cup top-10, finishing ninth at Phoenix.

Wimmer began his first full Cup season in 2004 by finishing third in the Daytona 500.
