Sammy Sosa is one of the best baseball players the Dominican Republic has ever produced. In 1989, Sammy entered the major leagues with the Texas Rangers. Throughout his career he played for the Rangers, Chicago White Sox, Chicago Cubs and Baltimore Orioles.
Along with Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa made a run at the all-time home run record set by Roger Maris. He eventually hit 66 home runs in 1998, falling just 4 short of Mark McGwire's record of 70.
Sosa is ranked 5th on the all-time home run list with 588. He also holds numerous awards and records including National League Most Valuable Player in 1998, "Sportsman of the Year," the first player ever to record three 60 home run seasons, and the most home runs in a month with 20 in 1998.
Presently, Sosa is not currently playing baseball but is on the free agent list.
