Following law school, Shapiro journeyed to Baltimore for a federal clerkship and began teaching. He was Maryland State Securities Commissioner from 1972-74 and founded Shapiro and Olander, a prominent Baltimore law firm, in 1972.
Shapiro's sports management firm, Shapiro, Robinson & Associates, was founded in 1976 and has earned a national reputation with its holistic approach to contract negotiation, sound financial management and a commitment to community involvement on the part of its clients.
The author of more than 20 law journal articles, co-author of books on corporate and securities law, Shapiro founded Maryland's major bar review course, began a legal publishing company, taught at Johns Hopkins University, the University of Maryland School of Law and the University of Baltimore School of Law, where he was honored for teaching excellence.
In 1995 he founded the Shapiro Negotiations Institute, a negotiations seminar and consulting firm. Shapiro hosts a series of prime time specials on Baltimore's NBC affiliate and has appeared on ABC's "Good Morning America," and "Nightline," Mutual Radio's "The Larry King Program," and ESPN's "Up Close."
Extensively committed to public and civic matters, Shapiro has chaired more than 25 boards of charitable and community organizations including the University of Maryland Cancer Center, the Johns Hopkins Children's Center and the Baltimore Educational Scholarship Trust.
He recently completed 15 years as a trustee of the Gilman School and has been Treasurer and Finance Chairman for Baltimore Mayor Kurt Schmoke since his first run for office in 1982. In 1998, Shapiro was honored by the American sportscasters Hall of Fame as the recipient of the first Mel Allen Award for Distinguished Public Service.
Shapiro's dispute resolution talents have settled a major symphony orchestra strike, facilitated solutions to human relations problems, and resolved challenging issues in governmental and corporate disputes. Shapiro has frequently been cited by both sides of a dispute as the ultimate "Win-win" negotiator.
Mark Jankowski, co-founder of the Shapiro Negotiations Institute, has lectured on negotiation and dispute resolution at Johns Hopkins University and The Wharton School of Business.
Jankowski has joined Shapiro in delivering seminars to some of America's leading businesses, including MBNA, BT Alex Brown, Feld Entertainment, Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical, ARAMARK, and Hearst Broadcasting.
