Sheirer was Commissioner of New York City’s Mayor’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM). Following the September 11th disaster, Sheirer, in his capacity as Director of the Mayor’s Office of Emergency Management, played a key role in overseeing the City’s rescue and recovery operations.
Sheirer began his distinguished career in 1967, when he joined the NYC Fire Department (FDNY) as a Fire Alarm Dispatcher. He rose quickly to Chief of Dispatchers in 1989, Assistant Commissioner in 1992 and Deputy Commissioner in 1994. In 1996 Sheirer was appointed NYPD Deputy Commissioner for Administration and Chief of Staff to Police Commissioner Howard Saffir.
