Pat Riley is considered as one of the greatest NBA coaches of all time. Pat Riley began his life in basketball when he joined his high school basketball team. From there he went on to play at the University of Kentucky, leading them to the championship game. Following his college days, Pat was drafted by the San Diego Rockets in the 1967 NBA Draft. Pat was later traded to the Los Angeles Lakers and won his first championship as a player in 1972. In 1976, Riley retired as a player from the NBA.
Riley then took a job in 1981 with the Los Angeles Lakers as their new head coach. He would find instant success with the Lakers when he won an NBA title in his first year coaching. He would go on to win 3 more championships with the Lakers as a head coach. After winning the Coach of the Year award in 1990, Riley stepped down as head coach for the Los Angeles Lakers.
In 1991, Riley took the job as head coach for the New York Knicks. Although he led them to an NBA Finals, they eventually lost to the Houston Rockets.
Four years later in 1995, Riley took the head coaching job as well as general manager role with the Miami Heat. Before the 2003 season, Riley stepped down as head coach to focus more on his general manager duties. This did not last long. In December 2005, Riley resumed his head coaching position after taking over for Stan Van Gundy. Riley would then win his 5th coaching championship, leading the Miami Heat over the Dallas Mavericks in the 2006 season.
