He has traveled extensively in the United States and throughout the world speaking and performing for groups ranging from school children to patients, nurses, physicians, health care administrators and CEO's of health care organizations. Through the use of humor he demystifies the practice of medicine and makes it accessible to everyone. Shulman has published seventeen books including Your Body's Red Light Warning Signals: Medical Tips That May Save Your Life, and Your Body, Your Health: How to Ask Questions, Find Answers, and Work with Your Doctor. He has written, produced and acted in videos and movies, including the major motion picture Doc Hollywood, based on his novel.

In his role as an academic physician he has authored numerous research papers and acted as co-investigator on NIH clinical research grants totaling more than 8 million dollars. He has extensive experience in preventive medicine and patient education, particularly in the area of hypertension and kidney and heart disease.

He also has been instrumental in creating charitable organizations involved in increasing understanding between children in different cultures, enriching the lives of elderly nursing home residents and helping to provide needed heart surgery for children who could not otherwise obtain it. Shulman also serves on the board of the Gesundheit Institute, founded by the real Patch Adams, MD. Through his prolific efforts in patient education and entertainment he has become well-known in the national and international medical communities.
