Michael Phelps is one of the best swimmers America has ever had. At the age of 15, Phelps first appeared at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney as the youngest American male swimmer at an Olympic Games in 68 years. Five months after the Sydney Olympics, Phelps broke the world record in the 200 m butterfly to become, at 15 years and 9 months, the youngest man ever to set a swimming world record. He also holds world records in the 400 m individual medley and the 200 m individual medley.
At the 2004 Athens Olympics, Phelps had the chance to break another record by winning eight gold medals. However, he fell short of his quest but still walked away with six gold medals.
Phelps is currently attending the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He is also the head coach of the varsity swimming team at the university. Phelps cannot swim for the team due to his endorsement deals with Speedo.
